The Houston Astros held a press conference this morning as spring training begins to address the travesty that was their sign-stealing scandal, which had been taking place for a few years. Owner Jim Crane took the bulk of the questions from the media and vowed that advanced-sign stealing would “never happen again” on his watch. That’s great. Kind of like when your teenager tells you he’ll never do it again when he gets caught screwing up. We aren’t sure about you all, but that makes us feel so much better. All is forgiven. This circus, and that’s exactly what it is, has perpetuated because commissioner Rob Manfred essentially decided to do nothing about it. His slap on the wrist resulted in the forfeiture of their first-and second-round picks for the next two years, a $5 million fine, and one-year bans for general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch. Crane fired both shortly after that verdict. Wow. Big deal. Now that Crane has vowed it will never happen again I’m sure the baseball world feels so much better. As a matter of fact, since the punishment was such a joke, what’s there to say other teams won’t just follow suit and copy the same technical tactics the Astros used? Hell, if all it costs are the jobs of the GM and manager, and the loss of a couple draft picks, who cares? It’s not like the $5 million fine makes a difference (unless you’re the Pirates or Marlins). There has been a call for the league to strip the Astros of their 2017 World Series title. And with good reason. Everyone remembers the league’s uproar over the steroid era guys. Who can forget it? They (the assumed steroid users) are still being shunned by baseball. If the league didn’t care at the time they were playing, why do they hold such a grudge about it now? The home run record chase led to some serious gate receipts while it was going on, so of course the league turned a blind eye to it while it was going on. But steroids don’t make a hitter see the ball better. Or a pitcher throw with better control. Steroids are a performance enhancer. Meaning the pitchers may have enjoyed a little more zip on their fastballs, and the hitters an extra bit of travel on the balls they hit. If you know WHAT pitch is coming as a hitter, now that’s a serious advantage. It’s essentially batting practice for crying out loud! The guessing game was eliminated altogether for the Astros’ hitters. Manfred’s punishment was tantamount to a "you're bad" finger waggle, and he’s a joke for doing nothing more. It can’t be because he’s afraid of the MLB player’s union bucking up to him over a more severe punishment, like stripping the team of their World Series championship, because all the players on the other teams are clamoring for it! All we can say is Manfred has opened Pandora’s Box by refusing to do more than the little bit he did. The gates are now wide-open for the rest of the league to follow suit. Baseball has been tarnished far beyond what the steroid-era players did. As for the gamblers who lost money betting against the Astros? You all should feel just as pissed as the rest of the league is right now.

It’s been difficult for us out here in the desert since the news of Kobe Bryant’s tragic death yesterday. This is not easy to process. There have been other sports figures who have tragically lost their lives, so we aren’t trying to diminish those in any way. But this hits a little differently. Kobe transcended basketball. Kobe was global. This is having a deep and profound impact on the city of Los Angeles, but it’s extended across the world as well. We are all mourning his passing and those of us who have children were hit even deeper when word spread that his daughter Gianna was also onboard with him. They were reportedly travelling to a basketball tournament she was to play in. Kobe was the coach of her team. The only other tragedy involving an athlete that had such a profound impact on so many, that we could think of, was when Roberto Clemente perished in a plane crash. Clemente was such a humanitarian that his death impacted not only the baseball world, but the Latino community as a whole. This just hits so hard on so many levels we are still in shock. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families. While we try to make sense of this and wrap our heads around it, we know that Kobe being who he was would want the world to press on. To keep grinding. That’s what we will remember the most about him; the Mamba Mentality. Rest easy, Kobe. We will keep the grind on in your honor.

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that changed our country, and the world, forever. We wanted to honor and respect this day for what it is. It is a painful reminder that there were 3,000 innocent lives lost in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It’s also a reminder that there is evil in the world that hates us. Hates our way of life. It’s been 18 years since the attacks of 9/11, and unfortunately the war on terror still goes on. But it’s not one that we, as a nation, will ever back down from. We will always remember those who lost their lives 18 years ago today. You are forever in our hearts. #NeverForget

With the International Champions Cup down to its final three matches, and football season right around the corner, we wanted to take a look back at this past summer and how it all played out on the pitch. As everyone waits with anticipation where Kawhi Leonard will land, we’ve fielded countless questions as to whether or not we have an inside track on what his decision will be. We wish we did, but the plain fact is we are in the same position as everyone else. We just don’t know. Leonard has met with the Lakers, Clippers, and Raptors and there hasn’t been any news regarding who has the inside track. Furthermore, the teams that met with him have been warned not to leak information or it would harm their chances of landing him. Obviously if Kawhi were to choose the Lakers, it would immediately catapult them into the clear favorites to win the title next year. A trio of LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Kawhi would arguably be the best to ever play together. Even better than the super team of Steph, Klay, and KD in Golden State. Furthermore, we doubt there would be any criticism of that choice, unlike when KD signed with Golden State. The reason for that is simple; Kawhi has earned both of his titles without having to play for a super team in doing so. Durant left Oklahoma City, infamously after the Thunder blew a 3-1 series lead against the Warriors, and signed with a Golden State team that was already loaded and had won a title without him. KD was never validated for making that choice because it gave off the appearance that he took the path of least resistance to win his titles. The Warriors had already won a title before he joined them, so of course they would keep winning them once he joined the fray. If Kawhi decides to sign with the Lakers, we doubt he gets any negative reaction from it. At least not to the extent Durant did. Furthermore, Kawhi’s personality is such that even if he does receive negative press over it, he won’t give off a reaction anyway. He’ll just keep doing what he does best...dominate on the court. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days as he decides where to put pen to paper. He’s from Los Angeles so it’s a good assumption that he will choose either the Lakers or Clippers. The big question is whether he wants to create a super power team, or go head-to-head with LeBron in L.A. as a member of the Clippers. A lot will be learned about what makes Kawhi tick when he makes his decision. Will he choose the Lakers and create another super team? Or will he decide on the Clippers and bring a sense of parity back to The Association? He’s earned his right to make that call either way.

Yesterday was a light day in terms of plays, as our insiders simply took the Raptors on the moneyline, then hit them again for the 2nd half at a small amount. Portland ending in a push certainly was a tough pill to swallow. Especially knowing the original line was as high as 4. Even worse than that, the Blazers blew another monster lead. We called for the Warriors to have leads in the game and at times control. But, unfortunately the insiders speculated that only for the first half of the game. So, by doing that you just made another bet (risk) but you don’t notice it because when you try to time something it doesn’t actually cost you money. Hence, you never notice the fact you just doubled your risks. It’s difficult enough trying to pick winning stocks, yet now you want to make it more difficult by trying to time it? Years ago, as many know, we went hands over fist on a company called Netflix. At the time we went ALL IN on it. Our average price was $6.35. We said to take a lot of profits from the energy bets and go beyond on Netflix. Obviously we were in troubled market times as the housing economy was weighing the entire country. But, as we kept sending our investor newsletter in 2009 not just recommending NFLX, we actually said, "if the majority of you don’t follow us on NFLX, then it’s obvious we should walk away as there’s no point of us being here publicly if you're not going to put your trust in us." We got endless emails and so many of them said mind blowing stuff such as, "Snitch thanks for the Netflix heads up. I'm going all in. I have a buy order at 5 dollars even." Folks we are talking TONS and TONS told us they were waiting for "their target" price etc. As many of you recall, we mentioned it in the newsletter and expressed how ticked off we were getting. Why the hell are you trying to time the market, and for what? We even said, who cares if you get in at TWELVE DOLLARS? Who cares we said if you are investing in the company that will literally be responsible for not just changing how we will use our television sets forever, but literally you're looking at a company that will change the way we live. People laughed at us and unfairly bashed us everywhere when the stock wasn’t doing much because we said, you're looking at a trillion dollar company. And said it’s actually quite easy to see - if you literally control the movie and TV industry, you're a trillion dollar company. If you have the power to turn TV guide magazines into a has been, you will be a trillion dollar entity. On and on we raved about Netflix, yet we had many who missed the boat. One story we received broke our hearts as it ended in divorce. The wife kept telling her husband to just go ahead and do it and place a small amount on Netflix. She was adamant. She kept saying to him, you love the Snitch so much so just do as the Snitch says. Fast forward. Here's an abbreviated line from his email, “Is there anything else you can recommend as I feel empty? My wife separated from me a few years ago and I’m hoping we can reconcile as we have shown hope. My children know of this story which I will always be mad at my wife for sharing. Please guys find another stock winner. My small investment in NFLX would have made me over a million plus dollars. I know you guys can do it again. Please find the next big one for me. I'll pay you whatever." This was all because of trying to time the market. Don’t try it. You wont get it right! This NBA postseason is as recent as it gets.
